January 14–23: Todos Santos Music Festival

Vivian Johnson

Consider this just-south-of-the-border fest founded by REM’s Peter Buck a worthy pilgrimage for dad-rockers with good taste: the lineup’s solid (Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, alt-country titans the Old ‘97s, Drive-By Truckers, Death Cab for Cutie), the setting evocative (the refurbished Hotel California in Baja, Mexico, plus free concerts in the town plaza), and the cause good (all proceeds go to provide educational services for local kids).

When former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck launched the Todos Santos Music Festival in 2011, his goals were simple. He wanted to play informally with some musical pals and raise money to fund educational opportunities, medical care and other assistance for children and their families in the Baja California fishing town of Todos Santos.

Buck succeeded, almost in spite of himself.

“It started off completely amateur. It was really an excuse for me to play music in winter months,” said the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who lives in Todos Santos with his wife, Chloe, for several months during the year.

“The Todos Santos Music Festival has grown from a few friends playing for a few people into an incredible event featuring well-known bands and bigger crowds, without losing the intimacy or impromptu spirit,” said former R.E.M. guitarist and principal of Vaso Loco, LLC, Peter Buck. “The opportunity to bring artists together to support the Palapa Society’s educational mission, along with other worthy local charities, is extremely gratifying for all of us. I’m looking forward to the festival’s fifth installment.”

The two-weekend lineup includes:

  • Critically acclaimed alternative rockers Death Cab for Cutie will also join the festival for the first time

The Todos Santos Music Festival first debuted in 2012 to bring musicians together to help make a difference in the community and support local charities. Last year’s festival raised more than $60,000, which was distributed to several of the town’s most invaluable organizations, including The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C. a local educational non-profit that helped lead relief efforts following the devastation in Southern Baja caused by Hurricane Odile in September 2014. Over the first four years, the festival has raised over $200,000 to support the educational mission of The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C. and other local causes.

With Todos Santos’ picturesque backdrop serving as a natural canvas to the festival’s artistic and collaborative performances, and the town’s philanthropic spirit, the event has become a coveted experience for an eclectic group of artists and music enthusiasts. The festival is inspired by the vibrant and charming spirit of Todos Santos, dubbed a “Pueblo Magico,” and celebrates the town’s deep cultural and artistic roots.

In addition to Hotel California and Vaso Loco, the 2016 Todos Santos Music Festival is also made possible by Secretary of Tourism for the State of Baja California Sur; Live Nation; Tres Santos, a new community in Todos Santos centered around well-being, connectivity and mindful living; Rancho Pescadero; Los Colibris; Todos Santos Inn; and the generosity and support of the local business and hospitality community. Palapa Society Of Todos Santos Hurricane Relief Project

Palapa Society Of Todos Santos Hurricane Relief Project - September 14/15th Hurricane Odile left hundreds of individuals in and around Todos Santos with a critical need for food, supplies and shelter. Almost immediately, the Palapa Society set up donation accounts with GoFundMe and ICF. Local and international response was overwhelmingly positive; however, donations were not available until October 6th; nevertheless, Palapa was able to temporarily loan money from its education, health and library funds in order to initiate food purchases by Sept. 20th as well as to begin roof replacements and fund a loan to Los Amigos de Pescadero to start their relief work in a timely manner.

In addition, a community-wide 18 member committee was formed in order to determine priorities for the donated Hurricane Relief Funds. Comprehensive information and photos detailing PSTS Hurricane Relief efforts are available at www.palapasociety.org; however, the following is also very important to know:

*Thus far, over 1,100,000 pesos have been donated through GoFundMe, the International Community Foundation, and 2015 Todos Santos Music Festival ticket sales.

*Expenditures as of Oct. 20th total 475,989.69 pesos. See category spending chart.

Numerous volunteers and paid construction workers have spent countless hours assessing needs and providing relief to Todos Santos and outlying ranch families. As donated funds remain available, construction and other help will continue during the next several weeks. If you know someone who needs help because of the hurricane, please contact [email protected]. ☞ Todos Santos

In the aftermath of destruction left by category 4 Hurricane Odile on September 14th which brought winds of up to 165 mph straight up the baja peninsula, The Palapa Society of Todos Santos accepted the challenge of serving the people of Todos Santos on a wider scale. Our regular mission of the development and administration of scholarship, education, medical and environmental programs for the benefit of local children and their families, suddenly expanded into helping them survive and rebuild. Homes had been severely damaged and in some cases lost all together. People’s lives were completely disrupted. No one was spared loss and damage as we emerged from our hiding places on the morning of the 15th to assess our damages and lick our wounds. We were all in this together and somehow repair and rebuilding needed to begin.

The Palapa Society met and determined that we would take on this responsibility. The first phase was fundraising, and the international response was phenomenal. We were gratified by the trust and confidence that was bestowed upon us, but at the same time humbled by the great responsibility that this now was given us.

Decisions were made quickly and with unanimity of spirit. The Mexican government was also responding quickly, sending in electrical repair and cleaning crews. The local fire department, (bomberos) dispensed water. People were overwhelmed but calm, knowing that we would move through this together.

As a group we needed to assess needs that would not be covered by the government and that would assist getting people back on their feet. Overnight we created a “company” that would be able to move with the utmost speed to assist the people.

Phase 1 - Food Dispensas

Our first move was to purchase “dispenses” (pre packaged food) and supplemental food items to give to the people. The families in the far distant ranches were the ones in most need of this help since it was difficult to get out to stores, so we made three separate day long treks back into the sierras to visit people and bring them aid. What we saw there confirmed that every family had been affected by this storm. Roofs had been torn off, palapas and walls had collapsed everywhere we visited. It is amazing that there were few deaths and injuries from this terrifying night. What we also saw was the indomitable spirit of the people of Baja, clinging together as family and friends to survive and rebuild their lives. We also were affected by how grateful these people were, of course for the delivery of food, but also that someone in the outside world was thinking and caring about them.

Phase 2 - Roof Rebuilding

Phase 2 required a definite plan. The fundraising had been strong, so now the responsibility came of figuring how to distribute the aid in a fair manner. We did field assessments led by the generous and indomitable spirit of Serena Saltzman. She led assessment teams who visited the families door to door in every neighborhood, recording names, number of people in each household, and what the damage had occurred . In reporting back to the “Relief Group” which consisted of the Palapa Board Members in coordination with representatives from the community, it was determined that the next phase should be putting roofs back on houses.

We were incredibly lucky to connect with two gentlemen, recently arrived contractors from Ensenada. Oscar Aguire Acosta and Benito Borquez Atondo accepted the challenge wholeheartedly and with the pleasure of helping their new community. Guided by Serena, they began their visits of the homes. Assessments are followed by the work crews. Lumber, attachments and tools were purchased. Work crews hired. Later metal lamina was added to the list since, although promised by the government, it was still forthcoming. Some families could attach their own lamina. Many required the help of the crews.

The numbers change daily, but as of this date there are three crews in the field 6 days a week. They receive lunch and a daily pay rate, all monitored by Oscar and Benny. At the time of this newsletter, more than 70 homes have had roofs repaired in a strong and professional manner, and the number continues to grow. Our projection is another 6 weeks of this work. Vivianne Juaragui has accepted the position of field coordinator, leaving Serena time to return to her regular duties as English teacher at the Palapa Society.

We are meeting twice a week, Tuesday and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Palapa Center to monitor and adjust our planning, and community members who wish to help are of course invited.

Phase 3 - Entire Structures

Phase 3 is in the planning stages, but the projection is to replace entire structures. The field assessment has shown that there are many people whose entire structures had been destroyed by the hurricane. A plan is in development now to use existing concrete pads above which to construct a simple but functional shelter which would be far superior to the present condition of sleeping beside a bush. The first few structures will be team led by Arturo Millan Villa and will begin the last week of October

Donations:

Donations can be made to gofundme at: http://www.gofundme.com/eskrns

We thank the hundreds of people who have already made generous donations, and write this newsletter to let you know that this money is being used 100% to aid the people of Todos Santos and outlying areas. Every single person in Baja has been negatively affected by this storm, and we are doing our best to alleviate the suffering and improve the quality of their lives. Our goal is continue with repair and reconstruction to the last penny.

Beach Concert Moved

The Todos Santos Music Festival announced today that the Punta Lobos beach concert, scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2013, has been MOVED to the Todos Santos town plaza because insurance for the beach event was prohibitively expensive this year. VIP tickets purchased for the beach concert will be honored at the town plaza show on January 19th. VIP ticket holders who purchased beach tickets prior to December 18, will be eligible for a $10 refund when they pick up their tickets. Moving forward the Festival will continue to pursue Punta Lobos beach as a venue for future years of the Todos Santos Music Festival.

The Todos Santos Music Festival is also very pleased to announce that the Twin Tones, a modern surf rock band from Mexico City, have been added to the festival line-up on Saturday January 19th!
